(Gal. 3:6-9)
Paul who rebuked Galatians on the basis of the experiential fact proves, and proclaims the truth of the gospel by virtue of the witness of the scripture.1) Paul especially has the text about the faith of Abraham in mind. It is very significant to prove the truth of the gospel from the case of Abraham, because “Abraham is the incontrovertible evidence” (W. T. Dayton) and the decisive authority for the Jews. C. R. Erdman explains, “Abraham who is the ancestor of Jew and the source of spiritual blessing is the pride of Jewish teachers. They said that they obey the law of Moses in oder to succeed to the promises which God promised Abraham.” According to the legalists, Abraham’s faith is nothing but his good works and it is his obedience that saved him. However, Paul has a different view and says, “Thus Abraham ‘believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness’”(Gal. 3:6). This is a quotation from
